FULL TIME POSITION WITH BENEFITS.  The Health Educator is responsible for assessing health education needs; planning, implementing and evaluating health education programs, coordinating health education services, and serving as a resource person in Health education. The Health Educator addresses the promotion of health and quality of life through education, policy, systems, and environmental change.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Under the supervision of the Health Officer, provides comprehensive health promotion services.
  • Prepares an annual written health promotion plan:
  • Selects Health promotion and prevention programs that are promising practices, best practices or  evidence-based
  • Provides in-depth involvement in their jurisdiction's Community Health Assessment and Community Health Improvement Plan (CHIP), including CHIP implementation and evaluation
  • Participates in community partnerships
  • Provides Health education programs for community issues that are not addressed in the CHIP, if applicable
  • Maintains an inventory of health and human service resources
  • Provides in-service training programs for staff, volunteers, and other interested parties
  • Crafts communications that are culturally appropriate and communicated in a language and format that the population can access and understand
  • Works with Health Officer and/or Public Information Officer regarding media outreach.
  • Assists with Risk communication plans to manage community concern and convey appropriate and accurate information
  • Advocates for policies and funding that will improve the health status of communities
  • Participation in grant writing to support local health department objectives, the CHIP, and health promotion initiatives.
  • Provides oversight to the Municipal Alliance for the Prevention of Substance Abuse.
  • Respond to Public Health Emergencies as needed.

Required Key Technical Skills and Knowledge:

  • 1-year work experience in Public Health or related field

Desired Experience, Technical Skills, and Knowledge:

  • 2-3 years’ work experience in Public Health or related field
  • Public speaking / Accreditation experience
  • Ability to prepare clear, sound, accurate, and informative reports containing findings, conclusions, and recommendations.
  • Excellent customer service, written and verbal communication skills with the ability to multitask.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, ability to communicate with management, supervisors and coworkers with professionalism
  • Ability to work independently
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel and Outlook.
  • Ability to manage website content
  • Ability to learn and navigate public health systems and other software packages
  • Ability to promote and facilitate the incorporation of Departmental core values and strategic initiatives into daily service delivery

Required Education, Certification, License:

  • Certified Health Education Specialist
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Public Health or related field

Desired Certification / License:

  • Master Certified Health Education Specialist with > 2 years as CHES
  • Master’s Degree in Public Health or related field

Physical Requirements:

  • Position requires work both in the office and in the community.
  • Must possess adequate vision and hearing to perform essential functions of job; ability to speak and communicate clearly, and sufficiently, both orally and in writing, to perform essential functions of the job.

Additional Requirements:

  • Effective 9/1/11, all employees of State and local government must reside in the State of NJ, unless exempted
  • Must have a valid NJ Driver’s License.
  • Must pass a Background Check
