Emergency Preparedness Reminders

Power outages can happen at any time for many reasons. Are You Prepared?

Our local electric service provider, Public Service Electric and Gas (PSEG), has made many improvements to strengthen our area power grid. However, outages can still happen at any time. Service interruptions may result from an accident impacting a power line or pole, ice on lines, high winds, and other unforeseen circumstances.

Below are some tips to be prepared in advance for when an outage occurs:

  1. It is a good idea to always keep your cell phones as fully charged as possible.
  2. Register your account online with PSE&G in advance and set up texting service. Text OUT to 4PSEG to report an outage. Go to their Outage Center page to report or get status on power outages. (See more PSEG tips below.)
  3. If you have a well, its pump runs on electricity. Consider filling your tub with water to flush toilets and bottling some drinking water in advance of a potential power outage.
  4. Check your generator in advance and keep it regularly services. If needed, keep it vented away from home.
  5. If your sump pump(s) run on battery back-up, check your batteries periodically.
  6. If you or a loved one has special requirements, such as medical equipment requiring electricity, plan ahead for the possibility of an outage and the need to evacuate. Now is also a good time to sign-up for NJ Register Ready - Special Needs Registry for Disasters a confidential list notifying local law enforcement of persons who may need special assistance during emergencies.
