Quick Reference: Reporting Requirements for Communicable Diseases and Work-Related Conditions

 

Why Report

  • Reporting of communicable diseases is mandated by New Jersey Administrative Codes and Statutes (N.J.A.C. 8:57, N.J.A.C. 3A:52).
  • Timely reporting of communicable diseases allows public health agencies to identify newly emerging infections, detect outbreaks, prevent secondary transmission, and evaluate the effectiveness of control measures.

How to Report

Report immediately reportable communicable diseases (including newly identified or suspect outbreaks) to the Health Department by phone:

  • Business Hours (Monday – Friday, 8:30AM – 4:00PM)

  • After Hours and Holidays
    • 908-359-3222, ask for the Health Department
  • If unable to reach the Health Department by phone call New Jersey Department of Health’s Communicable Disease Service:
    • 609-826-5964 (business hours)
    • 609-392-2020 (after hours and holidays)

Communicable Disease Reporting and HIPAA

Reporting of communicable diseases, as required by law, to the local or state health departments is permitted under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
